Brasil Beer: A Guide for Beer Lovers

Former BRCS exchange student authors book about Brasilian Beer

By Nora L. Wilson-Wheeler

BOLIVAR—Word has been received that one of Allegany County’s past foreign exchange students, Henrique Oliveira of Brazil, has recently authored a book titled Brasil Beer: A Complete Guide for Beer Lovers. Mr. Oliveira was a student at Bolivar Central School twenty years ago in 1992-93. He was the house guest of Tonya and Rick Childs of Plum Street. Although
his life has been very busy since graduation from Bolivar, he still manages to make return visits to our area every few years.

He is currently a corporate manager/distributor for a wire steel company. Before that he worked in risk management for PriceWaterhouseCoopers and AGCO (Massey Ferguson) and as an internal auditor at Sarbanes Oxley Act.

Why did he choose to write a book about beer? He studies beer as a hobby and has his own brewery called Ave Cesar. His research and experience gave him the opportunity to write the “travel beer guide.” Brazilians love their beer; it is the most popular beverage of the whole country. Today the country is in the middle of a craft- beer revolution. The book is a guide to the best beers made in Brazil, from north to south, and tells the story of the beer movement that is exploding in their country. This movement is led by professionals who want to elevate beer from its simple origins to something uniquely different and special. The new superior-quality beers have exciting colors, flavors and distinct tastes, making them very different from the common beers. They are typically produced in small-scale batches, closely watched by the brewery owner. Henrique helped map and list all the breweries, microbreweries and homebrew associations that are known to exist in Brazil. He helped track the routes, by state and town, to be traveled in order to find a good beer regardless of where you may find yourself in Brazil.

The book maps 120 locations where more than 500 brands of the popular beverage may be enjoyed. It also offers suggestions for hotels and other places to stay and where to obtain taxi cab services to a real beer tour! The book includes the beer history of Brazil as well as the Reinheitsgebot beer purity law, the secrets of fermentation, the raw materials and stages of fabrication, and tips on how to improve your beer tasting experience. There are routes, addresses, distance charts and available services you will find along your chosen route as you discover the different styles and brands along the way.

The author hopes the book will be available in the United States sometime in the near future. It first must meet its distribution margin in-country before being exported out. It is being planned now for translation into English.
